That "gunk" while quite nasty looking, is quite normal oil-water emulsion from running the engine in cold winter driving conditions. Granted, that looks, perhaps, like a bit more than might be usual. But driving only five miles in 10 degrees F would do it. I wiped it off and checked couple of times and nothing was there.
